Open Studio

Old Sacramento Waterfront is launching a new event; Open Studio will be held on 3^rd Thursdays over the summer months of June, July and August. Visit the district for after-hours shopping with special artists and promotions, great dining, and entertainment. The Sacramento History Museum will have extended hours until 8PM. Come down to see our latest exhibition on the history of canning in Sacramento and the Delta, take a special look at our spotlight on Campbell’s Soup Sacramento Plant.

The museum store will be hosting a special artist, Kay Hodges. She has been working with us for years and creates beautiful one-of-a-kind artwork. Kay works with antique type printing blocks. She repurposes the cuts that can no longer be used with a printing press and transforms them into art pieces you can add to your home décor. The museum store supplies a selection of unique words and phrases that represent our history, our city and our state. On the third Thursday in June from 4-8PM, Kay will have a variety of pieces only available for the one night.

While you’re in the museum, visit our Print Shop! Our printer, Alex, will be available to demonstrate and share the unique history of the printers we have on display. A small traveling press will be reserved for guests to experience printing their own print that they can take home.

The museum will have special pricing, after 4pm, evening admission will be ‘pay what you want’ donations. The money will be used to enhance our education programs, new exhibitions and public programming.

Kay Hodges from The Village Goose makes art pieces from vintage & antique letterpress and printer blocks. She expresses her passion for wood type letterpress by creating collages, word groups & other art forms. The beautiful patinas, fonts & sizes help save this amazing history. Each item using orphan type & printer blocks is unique.
